The Alabama Department of Corrections is searching for an escaped inmate.

William Carter Gron, 40, was being held at the St. Clair Correctional Facility and was assigned to an eight-man road crew working near the intersection of US 231 and Highway 79 near the Blount and Marshall County lines when he fled.

He was last seen wearing an ADOC white inmate uniform. He is a 5-foot-7 white male with brown hair and brown eyes.  

Gron was sentenced to 16 years in prison out of Baldwin County for theft of property. He has also served time for marijuana possession. He had served more than half of his sentence and had a possible parole date of November 2012.

Anyone with information of his whereabouts should call authorities.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of spring cleaning and would like to see the Old Leeds Middle School spruced up, break out your brooms, scrub brushes and hammers for this Saturday’s Community Cleanup Day. The public is invited to help clean out the Moton Center, or the Old Leeds Middle School, located at 1721 Moton Street.

On March 5, volunteers will focus on cleaning the gym in order to prepare it for a summer camp, said Leeds City Schools Community Education Specialist Sabrina Rose. The school board has already paid thousands of dollars to repair the gym’s roof and will soon replace the gym floor. One of the tasks on Saturday will be to prepare the old wooden basketball court to be renovated.
