Sen. Shelby announces grants for local airports

The St. Clair County Airport will receive $369,233 in funding from a federal grant, announced U.S. Senator Richard Shelby. The money will be used for rehabilitating runway lighting and taxiway lighting.

The Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration recently awarded a total of $1,394,902 to local and regional airports in Alabama for necessary improvements.

“A strong transportation infrastructure is critical to attracting new businesses and industries,” said Shelby on March 10. “These important grants will help the airports in the region make necessary improvements for their safe and trustworthy operation.  Such improvements are essential to ensuring that these airports remain efficient transportation hubs for those traveling to, from, and through Alabama.”

Trussville to buy property to avoid thrift store

TRUSSVILLE, AL (WBRC) - The Trussville City Council voted Tuesday night in favor of a plan to purchase property where a thrift store planned to open, the Trussville Tribune reported.

The newspaper, reporting Tuesday night on its Facebook page, said the council authorized the mayor to execute a contract to purchase the property near downtown. The property includes a building once occupied by Food World which closed its doors last year.

According to the Trussville Tribune, the city will purchase the property for $5.9 million and assume the mortgage of 3.9 mils.

The property owners had planned to allow America's Thrift Stores to occupy the building, but Mayor Gene Melton said the owners agreed to negotiate with the city after a large number of Trussville residents voiced opposition to the plan at the last council meeting.

State-wide texting-ban supported by AAA

BIRMINGHAM (WBRC) - A bill to implement a state-wide ban on texting while driving was killed in the Senate before it could become a law last year. However, the issue is up before legislators again with the backing of AAA, one of the largest motor clubs in the country.

House Bill 102 seeks to implement a state-wide ban on texting while driving that its supporters believe will become a law this time around.

"It's pretty obvious how dangerous it is so this is something we need," Clay Ingram, a representative with AAA said. "We need to have a law in place to prevent this and to make our roads safe."

About 20 cities across Alabama have adopted their own local texting bans, which Ingram says is a good indicator of the overall support in the state.

Shelby announces $33 million for new veterans home

Shelby announces $33 million for new veterans home

The future State Veterans’ Home in Pell City will receive federal funds to help construct the two new facilities.

Senator Richard Shelby announced Friday that the home will receive an award of nearly $33 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs to help build a 174-bed nursing facility, as well as an 80-bed domiciliary. Domicilliary’s were established after the Civil War for economically disadvantaged veterans; however they have evolved into active clinical rehabilitation and treatment programs for vets.

“It is important that we offer top-notch care facilities for those who have fought for the freedom of this country,” Shelby said in a release. “This grant is a positive sign that construction on the project is moving forward towards completion.”

The $32,965,078 the VA has awarded the facility is 65 percent of the total construction costs; the state is responsible for the remaining $17 million, according to the St. Clair Times.

Community clean-up day focuses on Leeds' Moton Center

If you’re in the mood for a bit of spring cleaning and would like to see the Old Leeds Middle School spruced up, break out your brooms, scrub brushes and hammers for this Saturday’s Community Cleanup Day. The public is invited to help clean out the Moton Center, or the Old Leeds Middle School, located at 1721 Moton Street.

On March 5, volunteers will focus on cleaning the gym in order to prepare it for a summer camp, said Leeds City Schools Community Education Specialist Sabrina Rose. The school board has already paid thousands of dollars to repair the gym’s roof and will soon replace the gym floor. One of the tasks on Saturday will be to prepare the old wooden basketball court to be renovated.
