Thomas Sullivan loses battle with cancer

ASHVILLE, AL (WBRC)- A six-year-old boy from St. Clair County has lost his battle with cancer.

Thomas Sullivan, also known as "Thomas J," died Sunday. He had been fighting cancer since he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2011.

FOX6 News reporter Vanessa Araiza talked Saturday with his family about the overwhelming support they got from social media and www.TeamThomasJ.com, a website established to support Thomas during his journey.

A Facebook page, "Prayers for Thomas Sullivan," was also established to help support Thomas and his family.

Marine patrol officers remind boaters of water safety

PELL CITY, AL (WBRC)- A lot of people are hitting the highways and water for Memorial Day Weekend.

Pell City Police Officer Bo Andrews is one of the marine patrol officers who will be keeping people safe on Lake Logan Martin this weekend. He says he's already seen more than a hundred boaters out on the water today.

He says police have been reminding people about boating safety:

-Children 8 and under must wear a lifevest at all times

-Boaters must have lifevests available for all passengers

-Boats must have a fire extinguisher

Alabama Power warns customers of bill scam

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Alabama Power is warning customers about a phone scam.

Officials say someone is calling customers, telling them their power will be shut off at a certain time if they don't pay. The customers are told to go an buy a reloadable debit card and are given a deadline to pay. When the customer buys the card and calls back with the information, the card is quickly emptied.

Alabama Power officials say, unfortunately, some people have already been duped.

"The thing we want to remind our customers is: that's not the way we do business. If you have every have any question...hang up the phone and call [the utility company]," Ike Pigott said.

Leeds Taco Bell catches on fire

LEEDS, AL (WBRC)- A Taco Bell in Leeds was evacuated Monday night after a fire broke out in the drive-through section of the restaurant.

The fire happened at the Taco Bell on Ashville Road around 11:30 p.m. Monday. It took crews around half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities have not said what caused the fire.
