Ala. House votes to give teachers 2 percent raise

Ala. House votes to give teachers 2 percent raise
MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) -The Alabama House has voted to give public school teachers a 2 percent pay raise, less than the 5 percent raise supported by Democratic lawmakers.

The vote came Wednesday night as the House was debating bills related to the proposed $5.7 million education budget.

House members voted 62-37 against a proposed amendment by Democratic Rep. Richard Lindsey of Centre to increase the raise from 2 to 5 percent.

Education budget committee chairman Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery says the state couldn't afford a 5 percent raise, partly because of money borrowed last year from the education budget and given to the General Fund.

Weather blog: Watching severe weather potential Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- The FOX6 StormWarn team has been monitoring the chance for severe weather all week. As of Wednesday afternoon, they believe the strongest storms will hit in the afternoon and mainly affect east Alabama. J-P Dice details more in his latest blog post:

This system keeps getting slower and slower. First of all, it looks like our morning commute will be cloudy and dry Thursday with rain beginning to enter West Alabama by 9 a.m.

The rain and thunderstorms during the morning should generally be beneath severe weather limits. The energy helicity levels remain fairly low during the morning hours.

Section of eastbound lanes on I-20 to be shut down for improvement

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Your morning commute could be a lot longer starting Tuesday morning.

Beginning at midnight Monday, eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 from exit 130 to 136 will be closed for about 90 days.

Drivers are encouraged to use the local detours. Just look for the detour signs to point the way.

This is phase two of an improvement project and the work could last up to Thanksgiving. There is a 90 day contract for the eastbound lane and then it will switch over to the westbound lane. The head of ALDOT in Jefferson County said the work is needed.

"It's in a very poor state of condition. Once you get to Oporto Madrid you got concrete paving; that concrete paving is at the end of its surface life. It has to be removed and replaced," Brian Davis with ALDOT said.

Davis said the contractor has been given a penalty and reward clause, $35,000 for each day the work is completed earlier or a penalty for each day it is late.

Study: More hospitals reduce early elective births

Study: More hospitals reduce early elective births

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- A new study shows more hospitals are saying "no" to elective early births.

A study involving 25 hospitals in five of the United States largest states shows a dramatic drop in elective early births, which involves women seeking C-sections or induced births.

The Alabama Director of the March of Dimes, Camille Epps, welcomed the news.

"Those last few weeks are crucial for brain development and their lungs and there are so many other things going on as the baby is progressing that every day does make a difference in their lives in terms of health," Epps said.

The chief reason for the decline was the hospitals implementing a new policy against early births unless for medical reasons.

"Once the hospital and its staff hear the results how they can decide their deliveries, it's almost a no-brainer," Rosemary Blackmon with the Alabama Hospital Association said.
