BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- The following are excerpts from the FOX6 StormWarn weather blog regarding the threat for severe weather today and tonight:
A band of heavy rain and
thunderstorms has developed further west, over Louisiana. A tornado
watch is in place through 2 PM for northern Louisiana. The storms in
this watch zone are expected to march our way later today and they may
hold together as they enter western sections of the state. For this
reason a slight risk for severe weather is in place for our area. I'm
thinking the greatest chance for stronger storms will be to the west. We
can't rule out a rogue quick spin-up tornado with any stronger storms
however the primary threat with today's storms will be straight-line
winds.
The main area-wide concern continues to be flooding. In fact, the
National Weather Service has already issued a flash flood watch and
river flood warnings along the Black Warrior/Tombigbee Rivers. A front
will be stalling across the state allowing for multiple rounds of
rainfall beginning today and continuing overnight. Tomorrow the heaviest
rain may settle to the south; however, the rain will surge north again
late tomorrow night and on Tuesday. Once again some thunder along with
heavier downpours could develop on Tuesday. We expect the rain to taper
off on Wednesday, with final rain totals in the two to five inch rain.
We expect a couple of dry days for Thursday and Friday followed by a
blast of very cold air. Some models are advertising lows in the teens
next weekend, along with snow flurries. We will keep you posted!
